My sole motivation for creating this blog is to document a horrible vacation rental place my family and friends had the displeasure of staying in this summer (the unkept McColl House at Geneva-on-the-Lake). McColl House represents $800+ dollars and one week of my life I will never get back. I have been looking for a good forum where I could post full-resolution photos with clear descriptions of it, and a blog came to mind. In an effort to balance my negative feelings about this place with positive feelings I have about other places, I decided to make a blog about travels in the Ohio / Midwest area where I could in the future post reviews and pictures - hence "Shithole or Standout?". That way it is not just one review of one bad place with me venting. I will post some reviews of "standouts" as well. That way you can see that I am a fair reviewer, and not just a negative person who likes to complain about every little thing.
In my opinion, there is a third category here, "Adequate", when it comes to businesses in the service industry. However, I believe the consumer has to weigh into the equation the price, convenience, and other factors that led him or her to select it amongst other competition; with that judgement it often becomes easy to categorize it as either "shithole" or "standout". "Adequate" should not be acceptable at any price point, and consumers need to stand up for their rights sometimes. Now that you know how I came up for the name of the blog, let's get started.
